Right Now Won’t Last Forever

Life has a way of making us feel like whatever we’re going through – good or bad – is going to last forever. When things are great, we want to hold on tight, and when things are tough, it’s easy to believe we’re stuck for good. But the truth is, nothing stays the same. The highs and lows are always shifting. When we recognize that everything is temporary and learn to be more present, we can handle our emotions with more ease and give ourselves the space to grow.

The Illusion of Permanence

Our minds often trick us into believing that the present moment, especially during adversity, is a permanent state. Thoughts like, “I can’t take this anymore; how long will this go on?” can dominate our consciousness, leading to a sense of submission and fatalism. This mindset not only amplifies our current discomfort but also projects it into the future, imprisoning us in a cycle of despair.

Conversely, during periods of happiness, we might become so engrossed that we neglect potential future repercussions, assuming the good times will never end. Both perspectives ignore a fundamental truth: everything is temporary.

Letting Emotions Flow

Imagine sitting by a stream, watching leaves float by – each leaf representing a thought or emotion. This visualization encourages us to observe our feelings without becoming entangled in them. By allowing emotions to flow naturally, we acknowledge their presence without granting them undue power over our well-being.

Practices such as meditation and deep breathing can facilitate this process. Regular meditation helps us become aware of our thoughts and feelings, enabling us to observe them without judgment. Engaging in activities like meditation can be instrumental in managing stress and finding meaning, even during challenging times.

Balancing Acceptance and Growth

Personal growth requires a delicate balance: being humble enough to recognize the need for change and confident enough to pursue it. Excess in either direction can hinder development. Similarly, catastrophizing our current situation or becoming overly attached to present pleasures can prevent us from moving forward.

Embracing a balanced perspective allows us to accept the present moment while remaining open to future possibilities. This approach fosters resilience and adaptability, essential traits for navigating life’s uncertainties.

Taking Proactive Steps

One of the most empowering responses to feelings of stagnation or helplessness is to take proactive steps, no matter how small. Focusing on actions within our control can shift our mindset from passive resignation to active engagement. Engaging in activities that bring joy and practicing self-care can enhance resilience and provide a sense of purpose.

Starting with manageable tasks can lead to insights and opportunities for growth. Each small victory builds momentum, reinforcing our capacity to influence our circumstances positively.

The Power of Presence

Eckhart Tolle, in “The Power of Now,” emphasizes that life consists of a series of present moments. Resisting what we cannot change only amplifies pain. By anchoring ourselves in the present, we can observe our thoughts without judgment and recognize that both joy and sorrow are transient.

Focusing on the present doesn’t mean ignoring the future; rather, it involves fully engaging with the current moment, understanding that it’s the only time we truly possess. This awareness can alleviate the anxiety of projecting current challenges indefinitely.

Conclusion

Life is a continuous ebb and flow of experiences, emotions, and events – like a river that never stands still. Some moments are calm and serene, while others feel turbulent and overwhelming. But just as the river carries leaves downstream, our emotions, too, are meant to move through us, not define us. By acknowledging the impermanence of both good and bad times, we can navigate our journey with greater stability and composure. Instead of clinging to the leaves or trying to stop the current, we can sit by the stream, watch our emotions drift past, and remain present in the current moment. Embracing the present, allowing emotions to flow naturally, and taking proactive steps empower us to live more fully and authentically. Today’s challenges, no matter how intense, are just passing leaves in the stream of life – and by focusing on the now, we open ourselves to growth and new possibilities.

Action: A Key Component to Manifestation

Manifestation. The word is thrown around like it’s a mystical power that will deliver you what you want just by thinking really hard about it. Using Journey Based Outcomes to Embrace Growth

In the My Purpose framework, which uses Goals, Objectives, Strategies, and Actions, we typically think of objectives as markers along the way towards our goals. It seems natural to set objectives that are a percentage towards what we think is the final outcome, which is really another objective on our way towards living into our goals. These objectives are called outcome-based objectives, and focus on results.
